Your wedding cake is the centrepiece of your day; it is on display during your wedding breakfast for your guests to admire, then later, they all crowd around to take photos while you and your new spouse pose with a knife and then cut into it.  Your guests will be excited to try a piece of that delicious cake that they have been admiring throughout the day, but how on earth do you decide on the design of your luxury wedding cake?

As a wedding cake designer, I often meet couples who say that they cannot book yet because they don’t know what design they want and don’t even know where to begin – well that is where I come in!

The first thing to do is find the right wedding cake designer for you.

The best way to start is by finding a wedding cake designer that you want to work with to design your perfect wedding cake.  Do this by looking at their previous work on their website, Instagram and Pinterest pages, to see if you like the style of the cakes on display, then arrange to have a chat with them to see if you get along and you feel you could work together to design your perfect wedding cake.

I have an online dairy that allows potential clients to book a 15-minute “discovery call” which gives a chance to ask any questions you might have about the whole design process. You can access that calendar here to book your call.

How does the design process work?

Once we have agreed to work together, I like to chat to with you and find out all about you as a couple.  How did you meet? Where do you like to go on holiday?   Do you have hobbies that you enjoy together? Tell me about your proposal, any little details that are important to you might lead to ideas that can be incorporated into your unique wedding cake design.

Are you using a certain colour scheme? Can this be included in the cake design? Some scrap material from your bridesmaids’ dresses might help with inspiration. I also like to see your wedding stationery, often seeing what you have chosen for your invitations can inspire a cake design.

Use the free technology that is available to help with ideas

Google image searches, and Pinterest are wonderful sources to find images of wedding cakes, your can read my previous blog on Wedding Cakes That Will Always Be In Style. You can find yourself lost for hours looking at images of the most fabulous cakes, but try to focus on finding the bits you like about each cake.

I often advise clients to start a Pinterest page, save images of cakes you like, make notes on each one about what you like, or even dislike, is it the colours? The lustre shine? The height of each tier? Or even the style of writing on a monogram? You can add me as a collaborator to your board and this allows me to see your likes and dislikes and helps to get feel for the style of cake that might suit you.

This cake was for a fairy-themed wedding, the sugar flowers matched the bride’s bouquet.
The bride told me her theme but left the entire design to me and asked me to surprise her on the day.

When we get together for a consultation all these things can be discussed and we can brainstorm ideas. I will then draw up designs based on some of the things we have discussed.

This does not have to be the final design, we can try a few ideas until you are happy that we have the perfect wedding cake to fit into your perfect wedding day.

So, to summarise, don’t get into a panic about your wedding cake, thinking you need to come up with a design yourself before booking your cake artist, that is what we are here for.
